Our stay at the Hotel Aiguille Percee in Tignes | With Mark Warner

For someone — like me — who’s never been to the mountains before, the coach journey from Grenoble airport to the ski resort of Tignes was pretty spectacular.

Winding through the French Alps, looking down over vast canyons and valleys — all smothered in a thick layer of snow — was breathtaking.

And as we pulled in to Tignes-Le-Lac and the coach stopped, we were able to get a proper look at where we were going to be spending our first ever family ski holiday.

Tignes is located 2100 metres above sea level; and due to the high altitude offers skiers the chance of fabulous snow, even late on in the season.

We arrived on 12th March and — apart from the roads which were clear — everywhere else was covered in a dense blanket of snow.

The coach dropped us off and we walked up the footpath to our home for the week;

Looking every inch as chalet-like as I’d hoped, we were warmly greeted at the front desk by Wayne — the lovely general manager — who checked us in and let us know when, and where, all the welcome meetings were; plus the times of the meals etc.

The Accommodation

We stayed in two adjoining rooms that were situated on the 2nd floor of the hotel.

The boys had a twin room; with an ensuite shower room. And their daddy and I had a mirror image set up; with the two singles pushed together to create a kingsize bed.

The rooms were basic — but really comfy — with white-washed, scandi-chic wooden cladding on the walls.

And a massive bonus — flat screen TVs that showed lots of English TV channels. Perfect for the boys, as they were able to watch CBeebies in their room whilst their daddy and I got ready for supper.

Good for us too as it meant they were happily distracted!

Both rooms had lovely modern bathrooms with power showers.

I do wish that we’d had a bath in one of the rooms — especially after a hard days skiing — but apart from that we loved our home-from-home at the Hotel Aiguille Percee.

And the best thing of all was the balcony — and the views.

Waking up each morning and opening the curtains to the amazing vistas, that surrounded the hotel, was priceless.

Tignes Le Lac is nestled in a little hollow in the Alps, with mountains rising up around on every side.

The views are absolutely spellbinding.

Particularly first thing in the morning  when the sun was beginning to rise and the slopes were clear.

The Food

We were staying at the Hotel Aiguille Percee on a half board basis; so breakfast, afternoon tea and an evening meal — plus wine — were all included.

Breakfast was buffet-style. There was a good selection of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, toast and pastries etc. My boys made a beeline for pain-au chocolat every morning — and I stuck to porridge and honey. Plus we could have a full cooked breakfast, if we fancied it too.

And it was definitely worth stocking up on carbs each morning, as we burned SO much energy once we hit the slopes.

We ate lunch every day in a fabulous café on the square — L’Escale Blanche — then back to the Aiguille for afternoon tea. Which was the highlight of my day! There were always delicious soups, with freshly baked breads, plus tea, coffee and cake.

The Mark Warner catering team were so amazing. The twins celebrated their fourth birthday on our second day at the hotel and the kitchen even made them a birthday cake, that they were able to share with all the other children.

At mealtimes, the hotel restaurant was always busy — particularly in the evenings — so it was always worth booking in advance; and we put our names on the list each morning, to reserve a slot for supper.

We had a hot-buffet for the evening meal on the first night — and again mid week — then à la carte during the rest of the stay; which consisted of a choice of three starters, three mains and a selection of desserts.

On Thursday nights, the Mark Warner chalet staff had the evening off, so we ventured out to the Pizzeria across the square.

We thought the food and drink at the hotel was really good. It was really tasty and beautifully presented too. The chef and her team did an amazing job, given the fact they had so many mouths to feed.

The Spa

The Viva Spa at the Hotel Aiguille Percee in Tignes was absolutely lovely.

So peaceful and practically empty every time I ventured down there.

It had a pool — very good for when you don’t have access to a bath and need to soak your aching muscles — a steam room and a sauna. There was also a therapy room, with an Elemis approved beauty therapist; who gave one of the best deep tissue massages I’ve ever had.

Plus it boasted the most spectacular view of any spa I’ve ever visited.

The Childcare

This is literally another post in it’s own right.

I’ve got so many images and so much to say about the childcare that I’m going to follow up with a separate post, for everything the twins got up to.


All in all, we absolutely loved the Hotel Aiguille Percee in Tignes.

It’s proximity to the ski schools and slopes was amazing — you couldn’t ask for better.

We met so many lovely people during our week’s stay. It was a bit of a surprise to see how many older couples without kids — and families with grown-up children — had booked to stay at the hotel.

I — wrongly — assumed that Mark Warner Holidays were just for families with young children but in fact, as it was term-time, we were in the minority.

This would probably be very different in school holidays though.

Wayne and his team did a sterling job of looking after us all.

For anyone looking for the perfect location for a family ski holiday, the Hotel Aiguille Percee hits every mark. It catered so well for all our needs and Tignes — as a resort — was just fabulous. Great for total beginners — like me and the twins — and amazing for accomplished skiers like my husband.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely. We absolutely loved it.
