I’m always interested to see what design houses and colour experts deem to the the new colour of the year. Pantone’s colour of the year 2022 is Very Peri — a rich hyacinth blue shade. I’ve chosen 8 things to buy in Very Peri for the home and wardrobe. Easy staples to inject a little of this violet toned blue shade in to your life.
This is quite a special colour of the year for Pantone, as for the first time in its 23 year history, it’s created a brand new shade.
Pantone is always fairly thoughtful about its colour selections for the year.
They rarely seem to be chosen just on the basis that it’s a popular shade. And more often because it has a metaphorical significance to an underlying global — or environmental — matter.

Previous Pantone Colours of the Year
Previous colours of the year have included Ultra Violet — a vivid purple; of which Pantone said ‘communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.’
The 2019 colour of the year was Living Coral.
There had been so much green — on both interiors and fashion — the year before, it almost seemed a dead cert that their colour of the year would follow suit.
But — whilst all the paint manufacturers promoted verdant shades that year, Pantone went against the grain once more, declaring that the peachy red tone was their colour of the year.
Of Living Coral they said:
‘In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.’
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director – Pantone Colour Institute
And in 2016 — when the UK was in turmoil due to the imminent Brexit vote — Pantone declared not one but two colours of the year. One was a soft pink — Rose Quartz.
But the other was an ethereal blue — Serenity.
And the description for this?
(Serenity) comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times.
Apt huh?
The Colour of The Year 2022
But back to this year and the colour selection for 2022.
Obviously, the last 18 months have been tough. We’ve all had to live life in the shadow of Covid.
We’ve has summers in lockdown; life has been marred by upset and change.
But Pantone’s response to this is to symbolise new hope in the form of a new colour.
I love this ethos.
And to celebrate this new shade — and a new era — I’ve pulled together a collection of 8 things to buy in Very Peri.

What Does Very Peri Mean?
And finally, what does Very Peri mean?!
Well, Pantone have had some pretty weird and wonderful names (and descriptions) for their colours over the years.
We’ve had Terrarium Moss, Snorkel Blue and Lucite Green — to name a few.
Very Peri has been defined by Pantone as ‘a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone‘.
So that’s it. Short for very peri-winkle!!
