Colour Your World | #30 Living Coral {Colour of the Year 2019}

Happy, happy new year everyone!

I had so many grand plans to share more Christmas decorating posts over the festive period but, if truth be told, switching off from the screen (and social media in general) was way too appealing.

Once I’d cracked open that first mince pie, my resolve went straight out the window.

But it feels good to be cranking up the computer and writing my first post of 2019.

And what better way to start the year that with a Pantone post. And not just any post but Pantone’s hotly anticipated colour of the year.

Living Coral.

Speculation and Psychobabble

I finished last year with a post on Terrarium Moss, which is another of shade from Pantone’s 2019 colour palette. There was speculation that it might be hailed colour of the Year 2019 — as there’s such a resurgence for all things ‘green’; in both fashion and interiors at the moment.

But Pantone always like to keep us on our toes, don’t they?

They’ve given us some really ‘interesting’ picks over the last few years.

Ultra Violet’ last year — which was a bold choice — then ‘Marsala‘ back in 2015. Definitely not mainstream, that’s for sure.

I always love Pantone’s descriptions of their colours; and particularly their reasoning for selecting a shade for the hotly anticipated ‘Colour of the Year’ slot.

On Living Coral, they say:

‘In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.

Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.

Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.’

Come again??

Now, I’ve read — and re-read — this statement and I’ve no idea what it means.

But, regardless of flowery language and marketing psychobabble, what we can say of Living Coral is that it’s bright!

Definitely bordering on the redder side of coral, this punchy peach tone is no shrinking violet.

  1. I quite like a bit of coral. Generally I veer towards pale pinky corals, but this reddish coral is a very happy colour! I could definitely get on board with an accent piece in this colour in my home. Love your picks Caro, particularly the PH5 light and Eames chair xx

  2. I love coral, but I’ve always veered more towards the pinker side of it, rather than the red toned. I love the boldness of this though, and your choices are lovely – that light is amazing!

  3. Living Coral is a great choice for Pantone of the year! We love introducing a pop of colour into our schemes and I can already imagine using this too.
PS We also have twin boys (and a third boy)…isn’t it great! xx

  4. Hmmm. I’m not sure if I love this colour. I can’t seem to make up my mind about it.. Some days I really love it (especially when I’m thinking about summer décor) and other days not so much. I just don’t know if it would work in our home… But, I guess you don’t have to love every trend right?! Now Mango Mojito on the other hand sounds good :P X #HomeEtc

  5. I have to say I’m not entirely won over by this one, perhaps in accents maybe rather than anything mainstream. That said, I know as soon as I start seeing people use it I’ll be convinced. i’m always late to the party X

  6. Where you ask “cOME again?” I must admit I smiled, maybe even laughed in my head. I couldn’t agree more. Their statement made no sense, and ok, we’ll take the colour on board but it’s not one to die for (metaphorically). We’ve seen better :) Great post as always!

  7. They do always like to go way outside what everyone thinks they will pick don’t they.

I love your choices. I quite like the coral family but tend to lean towards the lighter end.

You always make the colour you pick likeable to nearly everyone with your choices xx
