What Can I Send Instead of Flowers For Valentines Day?
There are so many lovely alternative gifts for Valentine’s Day.
I wrote a post a few years ago, sharing some alternative gift ideas. From dedicating a tree, to sending a monthly subscription of cake. There are some really great alternatives to flowers!
You could even make the delicious homemade chocolate slab recipe that I shared recently.
Eco Friendly Gift Ideas
As well as handmade chocolate, you could treat your loved one to a home-cooked meal. One of my favourites is Pasta with Puttanesca sauce.
Then there’s jewellery, books, artwork, a spa day…
There are so many alternative gift solutions to say ‘I love you’. Sustainable Valentine’s gifts are definitely on the rise too. There’s such an onus on mindful living at the moment. Sustainable gifts are not only lovely to receive — but it makes you feel good to be giving them too.
Here are a few of my personal favourites…
Eco Friendly Candles
Eco friendly candles from Noora make a lovely gift, plus they also have fabulous green credentials.
Its founders have sourced and produced everything to create their wares in the UK. The wax is 100% plant based and not tested on animals and Nooraa products are plastic free; conscious production at its very best.
Not only do the candles smell wonderful but you can repurpose the little pots they come in too.
Houseplant Care Kits
There has been a mini houseplant revolution over the past few years. Biophilic design in interiors is growing in popularity every year, and houseplants are one way to add a touch of biophilic design to your space.
Hashtags such as #plantsmakepeoplehappy and #plantparenthood have been used tens of thousands of times on Instagram and TikTok. And so much time and dedication is given to the health and wellbeing of our botanical housemates.
Whilst a bottle of Baby-Bio probably wouldn’t be acknowledged as a particularly romantic Valentine’s gift, UK horticultural experts Plantsmith have created some beautifully packaged kits that make really lovely presents.
Not only do they make perfect alternative Valentine’s gifts for green-fingered loved ones; Plantsmith’s houseplant care mist can be refilled again and again.
The eco refill bottle is made from a plant based polymer; sourced from a waste product of sugar cane, as well as recycled materials.
I particularly love the leaf-shine kit.
I’ve read so many ways of shining the leaves of my houseplants — everything from mayonnaise to olive oil. None of these seem particularly good for plants, so it’s great to find something that is — and works a treat too.
Et voila — healthy, shiny looking leaves!
Handmade Sheepskin Slippers
Another lovely sustainable gift is from one of my favourite new finds — Onaie.
They manufacture 100% real sheepskin slippers in Poland, using recycled sheepskin and sheep wool that are a by-product of the Polish meat industry.
In normal circumstances, the skins and wool would be considered waste; but Onaie’s craftswoman buy them and transform them into these beautiful slippers.
I love this ethos; it’s fantastic that nothing goes to waste. Plus, a box containing these beautiful slippers is sure to put a smile on most people’s faces.
Onaie’s slippers are a lovely gift — and are available for both men, women and children — in a wide range of colours, styles and finishes.
They’re comfy and cosy and the sustainable nature of the product also gives the feel good factor.
Valentine’s Day Date
And finally — one last thing.
You’ve remembered the present. You’ve bought a card.
Don’t forget the date! Saint Valentine’s day always falls on February 14th — every year without fail!
