How To Make No Sew Easy DIY Fairy Wings

No Sew DIY Fairy Wings

I was chatting to a friend the other day about fancy dress costumes for festivals. She was saying how expensive they can be. Particularly as she’d got to buy four lots of fairy costumes for one festival they were going to, for her little girls. I mentioned that I’d once made a bumble bee costume and the easy DIY bee wings were so simple to make. With that in mind, I thought I’d use the same method to create some DIY fairy wings for fairy dress up costumes.

They’re no sew and are super simple to make. So easy, in fact, I created these for my friend’s little girl whilst we were at Camp Bestival!

How To Make Fairy Wings

I’ve seen various tutorials showing how to make DIY fairy wings online. Everything from simple cardboard ones to diy cellophane fairy wings and really complicated wire frames with net stretched over.

These easy DIY fairy wings are so, so simple to make. And if you save up packaging materials from any deliveries, don’t even have to buy the bubble wrap!

These are no sew, no stick, no fuss.

The fact that I made them while we were at the festival shows what a simple DIY this is. And best of all, they’re lightweight, and look fantastic.

How Do You Make Homemade Fly Wings?

You can make homemade fly wings in very much the same way.

But, instead of a double wing (as shown here with the fairy wings) just cut a pair of single wings, in a long oval shape.

Very much in the same way that I made the grasshopper costume.

Instead of green tape, you could use black, grey or even glitter or rhinestone tape – to create the detailing.

They’re super-simple to make and lightweight too! And are just as effective as the easy DIY fairy wings.

Materials

  • Bubble Wrap
  • Tape (I used Sellotape)
  • Safety Pins to secure in place

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Pen

Instructions

  1. Gather together everything you need before you make a start: bubble wrap, Sellotape, scissors and safety pins. And if you don't want to cut your wings freestyle, grab a pen to draw the outline of the DIY fairy wings.

  2. Take two lengths of bubble wrap—one double the length of the other. The longer shape will form the bottom set of wings. The smaller shape will form the top set. Fold each piece of bubble wrap over to form a double layer and draw a curve at the non-folded end. Carefuly cut the curved end of each — making sure you keep the layers together as you're cutting.

  3. Open out one of the sets of 'wings', grab the middle, and bunch together.

  5. Tape both sets of 'wings' together; the small set on the top, the longer set on the bottom, using more Sellotape. Open the wings out and trim the edges until you get a shape you're happy with. Then attach the DIY fairy wings to your costume with safety pins. Or you can even stitch them to the outfit if you're feeling super crafty!
