Remember when I learned how to make pom poms at Camp Bestival? The boys and I went a bit pom pom crazy and made TONS of them in the weeks that followed! I trimmed our laundry basket with some of the larger pom poms. But with all the tiny, colourful ones we made, I created an easy DIY pom pom blanket.
If you’re great with knitting needles — or a crochet hook — you can make your own blanket too. But if you’re anything like me and can only make a scarf (at best!) you can give an old (or plain) blanket a new lease of life with the addition of some coloured pom-poms.
They’re so easy to make with a pom pom maker.
If you need a bit of guidance, read my full tutorial. But if you know how to make pom poms already, then read on.
This is how I did it!

Super Simple DIY pom pom blanket
- Firstly, choose your yarn.
You could choose the same colour as the blanket (for a more subtle look) or — as we did — go all out and use multicoloured yarn.
I chose a soft grey chunky knit blanket; which was the perfect foil for our bright pom-poms.
2. Next, work out how many pom poms you’ll need.
Will you have just one on each corner? Or a series of pom poms around each edge?
Once you’ve made a decision, you can set to, and start making the pom poms with the pom pom maker.
Attaching Your Pom Poms to a blanket
3. As with the basket that I trimmed in my pom pom tutorial, for the blanket, I sewed on the pom-poms by hand.
You only need a couple of stitches to secure each one; just pass the needle through the edge of the blanket first, at the point that you want to attach the pom-pom, then through the body of the pom-pom a couple of times to fix it firmly on.
And it’s as simple as that!
Learning how to make pom poms with a pom pom maker is so much fun; and you can create gorgeous homewares that are a fraction of the price of ones in the shops!
I love the addition of the little pom-poms to our home.
They’ve given otherwise plain items a little bit of character and colour — plus they were so therapeutic to make.
And the possibilities are endless! Lampshades, cushions… woolly jumpers! I can see that everything is going to be getting a little pom-pom makeover before too long!
